A certain American was once boast* ing to an aged Scotchman of the naval prowess of his country. Among the facts ho mentioned that one United States gunboat could capture the whole British fleet and tow it into New York harbour. The Scotchman listened with an ac» qmscent countenance.. It may bo as you say, he said at last. I can well believe it. But, inon, it would take a precious Bight clever mon than Chrjsto. pher Columbus to discover America next morning, I'm thinking.
