HOCKEY.

There was a strong muster of players on the Showground yesterday afternoon, when the opening practices of the season were held.

After a very even and interesting game Palmerston defeated Pioneer by three goals to two. There was nothing tip choose between the teams, and the issue waß in doubt until just on call of time, when Abraham sent a smasher into the not. This playor and Jim Slack were responsible for the other two goals. Bell and Boon scored for Pioneer. Beferee—Mr W. H. Maclean.

Midland put up the big total of 17, What time Methodist struggled fruitlessly. Yet the game was not so uneven as the score would indicate, for often Methodist would work the ball down to the circle, only to have their efforts nullified through absence of scoring men.—Referee: Mr J. Dalziel.

The Old Boys practiced amongst themselves, and after a two-hour game Cramp's team defeated Luxford's team by nine goals to two. Occasionally a player, weary and sore of limb, would drop out, but the others battled on, and it was not until the shades of night were falling that the game was given up. Mr A. Pedersen made a patient referee. Yesterday afternoon the Pioneer* elected Frank Bell captain for the season. '

Trophies presented to the Palmerston Club by its president and vice-president have been awarded by vote of members to Jim Slack and H. Scott respectively.

Old Boys A play Palmerston A next Wednesday. On the following Saturday Palmerstoa play Horowhenua at Levin.
