NEW ZEALANDERS AND THE ANTARCTIC.
Replying to the toasfc of his health at the farewell banquet to the Governor at Ohristchurch last week Captam Scotfc, of the Discovary, saia regarding the expedition that he never expected it would be of interest to the majority ; it could only interest the minority, but he felt that that minority was increasing, and more were seeking for knowledge of the unknown. He had heard opinions expressed that the expedition had been useless. It had never pretended to be utilitarian, but there -was some.thing above and Beyond the utilitarian point of view, and he believed that the English race would never remain satisfied while there existed things to be discovered. (Applause.) From what he had seen of New Zealand he* thought its inhabitants were of that character, and he only hoped he would live to see the time when the work of the expedition would be taken up and their footsteps passed by New Zealanders, who, passing beyond what the Discovery had done, would find out and solve the many interesting problems still to be solved in the south. The country ky at New Zealand's doors, and some time New Zealanders would consider it their duty to explore it. (Applause.)
