•• Wellington, Last Night. Headed by Mr Field, M.H.R., a deputation, consisting of Messrs John Davies, James Price, J. R. Stansell, Stephenson. Carter, and Saunders, representatives of tho ratepayers of Shannon, Moutoa, and Foxton districts, waited on the Minister of Public Works to-day. The unavoidable absence of Mr Vile, _M-H.R., was apologised for. The deputation asked for a pound for pound contribution towards the cost of a new bridge at Shannon over the Manawatu river: The speakers pointed out the advantages that would accrue to the district from the erection of a bridge, and mentioned that the district had been very self-reliant in the past, and had raised large sums by way of loans for their own public works. The; Minister said the Government had been obliged to reduce the publio. works expenditure this year. It had exceeded reasonable limits in the past. However, as this matter had been before the Premier and Minister of Lands who understood the circumstances, he would submit tho matter/ to them and to Cabinet before giving his reply. He expressed himself entirely in sympathy with the objects of the deputation, and saw that the work in question would result in large developments of the industries of the district.
