Interesting News Notes.
Warning to Night Birds.

Halcombe, Saturday. The lecture given here by Mr Gray (Chief School Inspector) on lan Maclaren's work, " The Young Barbarians," was largely attended and much enjoyed. At tho conclusion Mr Burcham moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Gray, which was carried by acclamation. The lecturer, in his reply, said his work of preparing the lecture was not a task but a pleasure, and he was only too glad to render any assistance to a society of this kind, and ho expressed his willingness to again help tho society on some future occasion, if necessary.
The.return cribbage match was played on.Tuesday night. The benedicts again proved victorious. Sixty-nine games were played, and the benedicts won by tho narrow margin of three games. The alterations and improvements to our local creamery have just been completed, and the creamery opened yesterday.
At the very largely attended meeting of the Band of Hope last night, the Rev Finlayson presided. The following was the interesting programme : — Piano, selection, Miss A. McLennnn; address on temperance, Rev Finlayson; song, girls ; recitation, " The Magic Wand," Mr \v". Croucher; song, Miss Fraser ; concertina solo, Mr Schlapback; song, girls; violin solo, Eev Dudley; duet, Miss E. Bradbury and Miss E. Dowling ; recitation, Miss A. C. Bursham, duct, Mrs Burkiss and Mi W. Furgusson songi'Mrs Dudley; song, girls. The enterprising firm of Pratt Bros, hairdressers, etc., of your town, have decided to open a branch here on the Ist of the month. This has- been a longfelt want and should prove a great con' venience to the gentlemen, of the district. 1 wish the Jinn every success in their new undertaking. $We hftvev some: night' birds in our midst, and in the starlight are kind «aough;to>":walk off" with some of our firewood. '% have no doubt that if this mean practice ■is continued the individuals concerned will be trapped. . The concert to be held on October 7th in aid of improvingtha domain, promises, to. be a great success. Mr Z. Thompson, our energetic secretary, has informed me that a first-class programme has been arranged, and the tickets are selling well.
