BUNNYTHORPE BUDGET.

THE WEATHEE AND THE

CROPS,

A FEW WORDS ABOUT THE LOAN POLL. WANTED—A PUBLIC MEETING. HIGH SCHOOL APPRECIATED. Own correspondent. The wet weather we have experienced lately is greatly hindering harvest operations. It is a pity to see such beautiful corn crops standing in stook and the farmers unable to cart it. There was such a promise of a hoavy yield that it positively disheartening to the settlers to see their crops spoiling. Let us hope the weather has taken a change for the better. Never have the creeks been knowii to be so full of water at this season as they are this year. Of course the dairy farmers are reaping benefit from the moistiu-e, grass being extremely plentiful, and we trust there is a fair promise of abundance of winter feed. I understand the hay crops gathered in have been very heavy and of first-class quality. On Friday next a poll will be taken in No. 5 Ward, Manchester Road Board, as to the raising of a loan of over J63000. From what I have heard I think it is doubtful if the loan will be carried, many ratepayers thinking their rates are quite high enough already. There is also some exception being taken as to formation of some of our streets. One street to be opened will necessitate a big culvert or bridge, whereas there is a road leading from tlis BunnythorpeAshhurst road to Dixon's road perfectly level, and which would cost comparatively very little in proportion, and would be of infinitely more convenience to the general public. The present, unformed roads are plenty good enough to drive stock on, and to form them will cost much money, there being so many hills and hollows in them, to say nothing of bogs and swamps; whereas the particular road I have mentioned is -almost a dead level, and should most decidedly be formed.

As some doubts have been expressed as to the existence of this particular road, I may state that if those who doubt it will visit the offices of the Emigrant AW Corporation in Feilding, and look at the map of the Manchester Block, they will find the road marked there, as I saw for myself in Mr Beattie's time, when that gentleman (now deceased) was manager there. I notice our Public Hall Company have issued their balance sheet, which appears highly satisfactory and reflects great credit upon the management of the directors and their courteous secretary, Mr H. Richardson.

In reference to my remarks about the necessity for the mail trains to stop here, I did hear a public meeting is to called to discuss the matter. It is time something was done, so I hope some of our leading men here will take the matter up. There are several other subjects which, could be brought forward at. the same time.

I hear a number1 of children from here are attending the High School in your town. This is undoubtedly a great boon to country children as the means of getting a first-class education. The Government, I believe, are kindly granting railway passes to them.
