"" ""* . , Contrary to expectations the local twenty-two made a brilliant stand, especially the tail end. Play was commenced at 11.30 and continued till half past Bix. Thompson and Hargreaves opened the bowling to Cobcroft aad Baillie, but the partnership was not productive of a great stand, Baillie being bowled in the third over before he scored. Cargill filled the vacancy and raised the score to-20 when Cobcroft played one on to wicket, his quota being 8. Judd joined Cargill, and some good cricket wan witnessed. When tne total was 28, Cargill was given out lbw with 16 to his credit, including one fourer. H. Hawke followed on with Judd. The partnership produced a few more runs, but the former player was caught by Warner when hia score stood at 6. H. Madsen did not last long, only managing to break his duck when be was dismissed, being caught by Bosanquet, Judd was playing careful cricket when joined by Perry. A lengthy partnership resulted in the score being carried to 60 before Perry retired caught by Leatham. Then came the disastrous retirement of Beaehey 1, Laurenson 1, Ogier 3, F. Hawke 0, Galwey 3, Ticehurst 3, and Keys 0. When judd was 26 he was caught by Bosanquet. Logan and Candy hit out vigorously, and soon knocked up 17 before the union was interfered with by Hargreaves, Logan retiring with 10 to his credit. Frith joined Gundy, but was run out ton 0. Sloan came to the rescue on joining Cundy, but the latter after contributing 7 was given out lbw.. Nicholls kept his wicket up while Swan saw ten to hi 3 credit, but the former's life was cut short by a Bosanquet catch. When the total stood at 19 for 117 RenaU joined Swan. The two gave a fine exhibition of slogging, and were uot separated before 142 was on the board. N. Madsen replaced Renall, aad the field were given some racing about, the latter hit.ing out with great confidence and vigour, his score beiDg 44 before he was caught by S'anniDg, including four fourers and four threes. Swan carried his bat for 19, the first innings totalling 205 runs. * Bowing averages—Hargreaves took 12 for SJ, Thompson four for 55, Bosan quet one for 21, Buvnup three for 56. The Englishmen commenced their essay at 4 o'clock, Warner and Whatman going to the wieksts. Wairarapa fielJed 18 men These two batsmen dealt severely with tha bowling. In the fourth ovfr Ogfev mulled the ball when he should easily have stumped Warmer. The seoro was carried to 64. when Whatman was dismissed lbw. His effort produced 46 Williams replaced him, but was retired when the pcore was at 67, one of which was contributed by him. Burnup had a fairly long life, carrying the total to 97, when Warner was inn out. Hi 3 effort was responsible for 24. Dowson was npxt in. Frith accepted a catch from Burnup whan the score was 122. Very slow cricket was then witnessel until tha day's play ceased. Stanning filed the vacancy till 171 appeared on the board. Bosanquet came next and knocked up two, when ho was run out. Leatbam joined Dowson, and these two wers both in when the stumps were drawn for the day, The individual scores were—Warner 24, Whatman 46, Williams 7, Burnup 84. Stanning 14, Bosanquet 2, Dowson (not out) 58, Leatham (not out) 3, extras 9, total for six wickets 185.

The Cricket Association has decided that 50 per cent, of the gross takings in the Sydney match with Lord Hawke's team shall bo handed to the Englishmen and New Zealand Cricket Council, who make their own arrangements. It also adopted a resolution repudiatine the action of the C ieket Ground Trustees negotiating with the New Zealand Council in connection with Lord Hawke's match, such negotiations infringing the rights tind yirivileges of the Associations, a body entrusted with the management of cricket in thi.s State.
