BOROUGH COUNCIL MATTERS.

(To llie Editor.}

Sir, —Thr.nks 'or the good account of the Borough Council's business you give of last night's meeting in this morning's iroue.. It enables we poor, long-sufferitg outsiders from floods, etc., to keep up-to-date, having .an early morning paper delivered in time for" breakfast. It i= very pleasing to hear that the Mayor nnd Councillors are so ready to sympathise with the Hokowhitufsquafctera. 0n ie ing the circumstances under which they suffered from flooding and the song lime, they have been paying rates for the land. As regards the site for the proposed Opera House, Crs Barraud, Cooko and Armstrong are the right men in the right place. Th>*y deserve our thanks, and show UiH they have a good br.ckbouo fo k'ep 'cm no straight, and d"> {)<".(• «n,;g(; u'u/j (,i/c wind or tiio ilofd. It in ;•. 6ity w havr so niany CcubcHßus who cannot find liioo to attonil O'» such «pocia! occasion* to cast their votes 'o ihe bonefit of.the Borough. There is only one place fit for the Opera House, i c.,"m the Square, the centre of the town, which has to pay. If you remember, I was tho only objector to enclosing Main-street (to ; njalte a'• lawn " of). In my letter -I poiMi./':d out how necessary i*i was aa a place of lunater, find Ehould not bo fenced in. "When in the Council, after wearied buttling, I succeeded in woirying the powers that be into having tbe noiice-board (look out for the engine) removed out of thecentfe of Main-street to one side. Yet I have not signed the petition ; didn't know, else I would, have. I can't see why the Mayor and Councillors should not work for the benefit of the town, i.e., the ratepayers. 1 saw two letters in your paper objecting to building on tbe Square, but one was signed by an " Australian Visitor," the other by a " Manawatu Farmer." A3 I. am told, neither pay rates to the Borough. "We can't afford to be too liberal and bay more land, whilst we have so much belonging to us. Better use the money to drain the town of its fevor-broeding, waste-liquid-holding cesspools, yclept creeks. —I am, etc., J. Mayo, Sen. .
