It is gratifying to know that after this colony has contributed its :mite towards the solution of difficulties in South Africa, by sending ten contingents to the war, the services thus rendered are highly appreciated by the paople they are likely to benefit' most. If we are to judge by .the enthusiasm which the Capetown papers display about New I Zealand matters, then we are enJ titled to conclude that our colony and its people stand very nigh in South Afticrn estimation. One of the latesc instances in which they "have shown this enthusiasm is in connection with the Premier's visit to.tbe Cape, when they managed to sa,y a great many complimentary things about Mr Seddon and the colony from which he came, even if they did not display a very close and intimate knowledge with New Zealand and its history. Amongst the moat conspicuous efforts made by these journals to show their appreciation of our help, was that of the " V-'ld," an illustrated monthly of considerable merit and influence. Its las", number was almost wholly given to depicting incidents of interest in connection with the Premier's visit,, as well as portraits of several of the prominent leaders of our various contingents. But not content with merely furnishing portraits of Mr Seddon and family, the " Veld" provides some entertaining reading in its attempts to describe the liberal legislation of which it declarea the Premier is the " godfather." In this respect the paper displaysmuch greater zeal to do us honour than knowledge of how best to do it, but perhaps its imperfect information regarding our legislation can be generously o\erlooked in view of the face that journalists in South Africa hardly thought about the colony before the war When, however, they came to deal wita the Premier's pec-
sonality they are on much surer ground then when, describing his laws, although this is the first time ■we have heard him referred to as a speaker " humorous to a degree." "With the aid r.f mauy striking head lines we are told that Mr Beddon was " a great man in the councils of this enterprising and energetic colony many ypars before the war drew the attention of ■ the New Zealanders to South' Africa, or made South | Africa acquainted with the potential strength of the New Zealauder ag a j defender oi the Empire. Mr Seddon j himself," it says, " can be imagined from his works. Pushful, energetic, and self reliant, he is for all that a
compaiatively poor rnau. As a speaker be is very active, being pic- j turesque and humorous to a decree." Tb& concluding sentence in this voluntary eu'ogium is characteristic of its wb.Q.ie spirit, for says the writer. " Scoith Africans are proud of the New Zealanda-s, fcbe foremost of whom is: Dick' Seddon, the popular Premier." It is not surprising thflt the paper which deals in such complimentary terms Avith our country I and Premier should congratulate I tho Mayor of Cape Town upon extending'to the latter the compliment of being the city's guest, aud a'ssura him that under the ci'cumstances hehad doce -'the right thing" in thus honouring a visitor who had stood | loyally by them in their hour of need.
