Jjord Raglan, replying to the Earl of Meath in the House of Lords said the Imperial Government was unable at present, chiefly for financial reasons, to adopt a military cadeb scheme similar to that which exists in the colonies. -A syndicate with a capital of forty millions sterling, has been formed in the United States to prevent a slump of steel shares on Wall street. . The Orient liner Ormuz, homeward bound from Australia, has been refused admittance to Gibraltar, having two cases of plague on board. The vessel sailed for Plymouth. The Commissioners of the 1851 Exhibition have awarded a science research scholarship to Dr James McLaren', of New Zealand. Washington, July 20. Lord Paunceforte, British Ambassador to the United States, is hopeful of being able to arrange a treaty with regard to the Nicaragua Canal in a manner that will be satisfactory to the American Senate.
