Prior to the commencement of the Earn Pair, the Mayor, Mr Haydon, made an announcement to the ahove effect, and asked those present to inpke a po?ut of being present when the men passed through in order to give them as hearty a welcome as possible. The Mayor alsq asked for assistance towards entertaining the troops, aDd" stated that he had already received £5 5s from Mr R. S. Abraham, and a similar amount from Messrs Barraud and Abraham. He announced that a meeting would be held with regard to the matter, aDd he asked all who were willing to assist by contributions.

This mornsng, the Mayor sent the following telegram to the Adrig-Premiec referring to the matter:

" Far better to alow Impeiial troops to remain two hours at one time, and pass through the other.. Your project entails double expense, and in not nearly as satisfactory to either Iroops or resw dents. Also the double event wili disarrange business. "Would gladly welcome them for one whole day, but one hour only in each day involves a great expense with very little benefit. £ii fu"y aware arrangements must have been difficr!fc for you Jo airange. How many officers and how many men are we to expect ? Kindly Jnform as epeedUy as possible. In any case I wi". do my utmost to make the visit i» success. Accept Pa'iierston's thanks for yor- successftf'y arranging for troops to come here."

Mr Pirani, M.H.R., to-day wired to the Government that Palmerston was the most convenient centre -"i the North Island for the country people to visit to tee the troops, and Buggesfig. that the soldiers should be kept for two hours here on Tuesday, thus enabling a display to be made, excursion trains being pufc on from the neighbouring districts! Ttie suggestion is a very good one, and we hope the Government w>'l be able to fa'» i a with it.

The arrangements rride show that on Monday next one ha'f the troops w :M visit Wanganui, lcav ,g the Well^gton pnd Manawatu Cbmpany's station at 6.40 a.m., au-iving at Palmerston 10 15 a.m.; leavag Palmerstbn 11.15 a m Retuinfiß on Tuesda yi the troops leave Wanganui about 8 o'clock; etop for ten minutes at Mai-ton and Fe;'d"ig and anlve at Palmerston at 12.80 p m' leave Palmerßton about 1 p.m^ and &x. rive at We'V agton at 5 o'clock on Tueßday.
