The Steamboat Race.
Per Press Association. Dunedin, this day. A passenger per the Wairarapa has given the Otago Daily Times a full- account ofthe collision between the Wairarapa and Adelaide from which it appears it was well known before starting the race would take place. The Wairarapa got the lead and held it, making no extraordinary exertions, but simply going full speed The Adelaide fired up till the flames were 20 or 30 feet above the funnel at times,. and made frantic efforts to join the Wairarapa on the bank or pass her, and this one of the most dangerous parts of the channel. The i Wairarapa had to go ahead or be run into or go aground. She was several times m great danger through the reckless conduct of the Adelaide. The passengers all praise the captain's cool conduct and good judgment. , It is expected the damages will be repaired for £250.
