Monday, August 8, 1881. '. [Before His Worship, the Major, and G. M. Snelsou, J.P.] OCSCENE tAN'GUAG-E. Anne Fowler, who had been fined upon last Court day, was arrested on Saturday night by Constable Gillespie for m king v c of obscene language m a railway carnage, contrary to the provisions of the P.ibiic Works Act. The prisoner was most violent m her conduct, and it required considerable asstsUince before she could be secured and conveyed to the lock-up. When brought before the Bench on Monday morning she was so puguacious and intemperate m her language, as to necessitate her removal to a cell, the evidence being taken m her absence. She was fined £l and costs, or twentyfour hours hnpiisonmcnt, ASSAULT AND BA.TTERT. The. same prisoner was further charged with maki-ig an unprovoked att;>ck m a railw.iy carriage upon a Maori woman named Mrs Jackson. A'-cused did not deny the assault, but asse.ted it had been caused through the bad language of tbe Native. Eviiieuce, however, was produced which conclusively proved that accused was the aggressor, and a similar penalty was inflicted, both -eutences to be concurrent.
