THE DISQUALIFICATION OF THE RET. MR. WRIGHT.
The protest lodged against the return of the Rev. Mr. Wright as a member of the Palmerston School Committee, was considered at the meeting of tbe Wanganui Education Board on Wednesday, and the objection upheld. While we agree with the decision of the Board, we must say that we cannot endorse its ruling as to its manner of filling the vacancy. We hold that if the Eev. Mr. Weight has been proved not to be a householder, it was illegal for him to receive forty-six votes or to record seven himself as such. It is just possible thit some of the fifty-three votes which were registered either on his behalf or by himself would have been given to the six unsuccessful candidates, and th»y might be amongst the seven elected members, instead of the rejected competitors. The Board has decided that th«re should be a fresh election for tbe om seat, but this is most glaringly inconsistent. Either the whole thing is illegal, and a fresh election for seven menbers should take place ; or if not, as Mr. Sneison said at the meeting, Mr. Hayns is entitled to the vacancy. The ruling of the Board on the last poirt is absurd m the extreme, and it is more than probable that the matter will be referred to the Minister of Education.
