OAMARU.

Monday. At the Resident;. Magistrate's Court to-day, John'Chalders was convicted of having m his possession a still and other apparatus suitable for distilling purposes, and was sentenced "to 8 months* imprisonment. The plant was discovered by the police and sub-collector of Customs m Chalders' house, ' situated on a farm leased by him at Incholmes, from the Hon. Mr Jftolraes. Mr O'Meagher defended him, and gave notice of appeal on the ground that the Magistrate suggested aud allowed evidence to be adduced to prove Chalders' occupation of the house after Balmer, the prosecuting counsel, had closed his case.
