The Manawatu Times. SATURDAY, JULY 21, 1877.

The English and European mail will close at the Palmerston. office, on Monday next, .at B'so p.m. ' Dr Johnston,^ of Feilding, will vaccinate gratuitously m the Schoolroom, Palmerston, to-day (Saturday)', bet-ween the hours of 12 noon and 2 p.m. The Masterton local papers contain' a numerously signed requisition to B. Gt. Williams, 'Esq., to gain' his consent tohjs being placed m nomination as Mayor. Hie reply is favorable. It is considered that he will be returned without opposition. We have received a communication signed " Awahuri," criticising the letter of Mr John Hanlon,- which appeared m our issue of the 14th inst. As Mr Hanlon's letter has already been fully replied to by the Eev. Mr. Hammond, we deem the publication of the present communication unnecessary. We direct attention to an advertisement elsewhere convening an important public meeting m the Foresters' Hall, on Monday next. The object of the meeting is a very necessary one, and its conveners earnestly i invite the hearty -co-operation of all m the | district. We trust that the. meeting on Monday evening will be- largely attended. The Rev -P. W. Jones, of Foxton, Primitive 'Methodist Minister, requests us to state that a service of song will be held m | his Church, at Foxton, on Wednesday the ' 25th inst.,' with "the view of liquidating the ; debt at present resting on the Church. Friends from Carnarvon, Sandon, Feilding, and Palmerston are cordially invited to attend: We 'observe that Mr G-oodison has now got a very pretty little entire pony — one of the Tom Thumb breed — which he intends to use for 'stud purposes during' the coming season. We understand the pony's name is " Lord . Palmerston," and as he is a - staunch little fellow we have no doubt Mr G-oodison's enterprise will be duly rewarded. , - A friend has left at our office ijhe sum of ten shillings for the poor man Kriffan, whose destitute condition we noticed some time ago. We shall have 'much pleasure 1 m hand- ' ing over the amount to Mr Litchwark, who is, we understand, m charge of the subscription list for the relief of the Kriffan family. Other amounts for the same object will, be thankfully" received and acknowledged. The following is a summary of the business transacted at the Eesident Magistrate's Co.urt, Palmerston, on' Thursday last, the I 19fli inst. r— W. Lingard v. A. H. Mr.Gk M. Snelson will to-day (Saturday) offer for sale that very desirable freehold property, at present m the occupation of E. Miller, Esq., who is about leaving the Colony, consisting of upwards of 21 acres of good land, partly. 'cleared;, together with a pretty and substantially-built cottage erected, thereon. This property is situated within afew minutes' walk of the Palmerston Postoffice, and fronts the main trunk line of road to Wellington. Mr Miller's household effects together with other properties will also be disposed of on the occasion. Sale to commence at 12 o'clock noon on the premises. ■ ; A petition is.aboiifc to be presented to the Chairman of the Manawatu County Council expressing,.the desire of certain settlers, ■ carters and others, that «the services of Mr. Robert Stanley may be retained at the Lower Ferry, MahaAvatu Gorge. There is -no doubt; thajb: the parties moving m this f ' matter are well able to certify bo the effir cieticy of a man m the capacity of ferryman; as they are almost daily making use of the ferry. We have urged the necessity of care being taken to secure the services of a competent man for this position, and as ;M?r Stanley has held the appointment for a long thhej.arid nothing has ever . been advanced against him, we have no, doubt that; the prayer of the - : memorialists will receive ;due consideration. v A petition for presentation to Parliament urging .upon the House " that m any Education BUI wlti^^^ may be under consideration £he ; fullest provision be made for the ■daily reading of the" Bible as- the ; first part of the ordinary'school course of instruction, even if such reading be given without note or commeht, ? Vhas been left at . our office for signature. .;We dp not hold with this petition simply because we think that if it were to take, effect a hardship, if not. a positive injustice, would be inflicted upon a large section of the community. Nevertheless, all who are -desirous of inspecting and sigh-, ing" it- at our office are welcome to doso. -We shall probably refer to the matter again. Masterton- has been m a great state, of excitement ; since ; the ; place:shas been ' proclaimed: a Municipality, and everybody ' looks, just as it'isomefcKibg' particularly plea- . ; sarit ; had befallen him. The' newspapers which"" contained the particulars . were eagerly read, and a clergyman thought the change worthy of a place m the service, when the Te 2)eum was sung by the choir. If this feeling of interestedness lasts till-the election of Gpuncillors, there will be some warn work.— " News Letter. " v - ' ; .The "Sydney -Morning Herald " of the 4th inst. says :— " Mr W. H. H. Davenport, '-- one of ; the -brothers whose perf ormahces have created so much discussion m England, America, aud njpre recently m the colonies, died'of- consumption at the Oxford Hotel yesterday morning. The deceased was a native of Buffalo, U.S.A., and first appeared m connection with his .brother and Professor Fay twenty-threeyears ago as expori-' ents of what have been termed spiritualistic seances. He arrived m Sydney a few. days ago from Auckland." * . The "New Zealand Herald" has been shown a -magnificent; sample of New Zealand grown oranges. - There were no fewer than twenty-one orangeSj fully grown and quite ripe, upon one small branch, which was taken to the office, and exhibited by Mr Rowe. They- were grown at pnehunga^ hot from the pip, but from layers. The tree is;about eight years old/ arid has" been bearing'four years. There ate now upwards - of one thousand oranges on= this single, tree. This is .a sample: of what, with proper care and^ attention/ can be done, m the way^of fruit-growing hi the North Island of :New> Zeahind. v ' . V ">: •"•,. '':'./ VAif Enabling Tonio. A medicated stimulant that enables these who use it to resist disease, the influences of exposure, sudden changes' of tempei'ature,' and to perform an extra amount of intellectual .and , ; mechanical labor, may be called airenabling ■tonic- These enabling properties are possessed m a wonderful . degree by that strength-creating and health perpetuating ally of .Nature, Udol^ho ; Woisb's Schiedam: Abomatio Sohnapps.— Advt.
