A meeting of the Manchester Highways. Board was held at the E. and C. The minutes of the previous meeting were read 'and confirmed. The'Engfneer's estimate for making a road to the Schoolhouse at Halcombe, was taken into' consideration. ' ' % " . Resolved, That the Engineer be requested to instruct the roadman at Halcombe, to do what is necessary to enable children 1 to # -get to the Schoolhouse.. Resolved," That the deviation from Mackay's line proposed "by -the Inspector, be adopted. .', • ~ *'i • Resolved, That the Chairman be' requested to ascertain at the' next meeting" of- the Oounty Council what arrangements can be made for progress payments on Mackay's road line. A report was received if rom the ■ Engineer on a remedy to prevent the overflow of Makino creek along Grey and Manchester streets. - Resolved, That Mr Bray be empowered to expend £20 in' clearing out the Makino creek. The Inspector reported the f ollow-" ing contracts on Mackays road as being let : — J.Harvey and "W. Baker, £18 4s; Richard Travina, £14; J. Lowe and J. Travina, £16 16s ; J. Stringer and J. Belfet, £18 17a ; P. Jeflieries and A-. Culvert, £3 15s. TENDERS. Clearing, 52 chains, Henderfon's Line — Henderson and Kirkpatrick, .16s per chain, £41 12s ; accepted. Clearing 50 chains, No. 2 Line, Makino Road — Thomas Smith, tender informal ; J. Grolding and C. Humphries, 25s per chain, £62 10s; accepted. 'A letter was received from.Messrs Bell and Grower^ applying for extension of time" to complete their contract for metalling Rangitawa road. . Resolved — That an extension -of ' time be granted. • An application was received from Mr J. A. Jackson, for an extension, .of time to complete his. contract for clearing-road at Bunnythorpe. •Resolved — That an extension of time be granted. ' \ ' ACCOUNTS : PASSED. B. Marsh (roadman), £5 12s 6d ; Peter Curreen, £6 ; " Rangitikei Advocate," £1 3s ; " Manavyatu Times," £10 5s 6d ; G-. H. Lyne (progress payment), £4; Ball and Cameron (progress payment), £50. A letter was received from tlie Chairman of the County Council, enclosing cheque for £ 18 10s. A letter was_ received f rome Mssrs J. B. Roots" & Co., offering to do the -formation of seven chains of road to give access to No. 86, suburban section, of Feilding, m consideration of. the Board 4 metalling the same soon after its formation. Resolved — That the Board accept their ofier, and agreed to metal the xoad when formed, but the Board stipulates 1 that the formation be laid off;- by their own Inspector, and the "work done m accordance with his ' plans. - A petition was received from several settlers on the North, requesting the Board to take into consideration the necessity 'of making the North road. A letter from Messrs Roots & Co. was also received/supporting the request of the petitioners. Resolved — That the Board has no funds at present to undertake the | work referred to by the petitioners. | ,A circular letter was received from the Colonial Secretary, soliciting suggestions from the Board as to provisions "to be adopted m the fram-' ing of a new Highways Act. Resolved, That the Board is of opinion that the present Highways Act works admirably, but the Board is of opinion that the Rating should be an acreage" rate, instead of a • valuation rate as at present.
