THE MUNICIPALITY.
TO THE EDITOR. *Sir, — It is very hard to argue in favour of a platitude, until the platitude is called in question. lam glad, therefore, to see that " Y^M. " has for the sake of argument endeavoured to say something against forming Palmerstoh into a borough. "V. M." says that Palmerston will relapse into its original darkness and lose one of its members. I do not know which member he refers to, but I suppose that he means the one who claims the lamps of the Church. This member, he says, will be given to Feilding when his innings are over. I confess that this is too deep- for me. He says that Foxtonwill become firmly seated as executive centre. .This I admit will be the natural result of the secession of the Manchester Block ; that is the very reason why we Palmerstonians want a government of : our own. We do not want to govern Foxton, we only want to govern ourselves. He hopes that Palmerston will have a pretty shell. This will depend upon how he paints it; but even supposing that he paints it yellow or green, it will be better than none. At all events it wilL protect us from being ridden down by J. P's. who are responsible to none but an indifferent Government. We shall have our Mayor oh .the Bench,. _ and spend our own rates and most of our taxes. So even if we only get £ for £ we -shall have an income in round numbers of £1,500 to begin with increasing every year. This will encourage a settled population of industrou's men by affording constant J^rk; while the street lamps and footpaths will encourage people With money v who are not accustomed to rough it. We shall not be too proud to look at our poor neighbours outside the town as " V. M." seems to fear, but will have more influence for theiivgood. '.._..; It is not our common interest in the rate fund which unites, our interests^ to those of our neighbours, but commercial, ; social, and other relations with each other.— l am, &c, • !> * ;'•- , ! . ■ - ■ _ ....:".■., > - ii'r • ■ ■ ■-.
