Complaints have reached us from ratepayers m this district of the inconvenience to which they are sometimes put, m consequence of the absence of the Collector for the Manawatu Highways Board, who is obliged to be away inspecting the various works for which contracts have been taken under the Board. This is a
serious grievance to ratepayers who are thus liable to be sued for nonpayment of rates, when the fact is that for such non-payment the Board itself is to blame, m sending away the Collector and neglecting to authorise any person to receive rates m his absence. The whols thing is, of course, an oversight on the part of the Board, but it is one which ought to be remedied as promptly as possible. In connection with this subject, we would remind those who have business at the Manawatu Highways Office that it is now removed to the Public Hall, as notified by advertisement m another column.
