A very convenient sort of Forests Act has been passed m Victoria. . It authorises the Governor m Council to appoint Local Forest Boards, consisting of not less than five nor more than nine members, removable at His Excellency's pleasure. The duties of these Boards are also to be prescribed from time to time by the (Governor m Council. In short, the Act enables the Government to take such action as may seem advisable for the. preservation of the State forests, without applying to the ' Legislature from time to time for authority to do so. The magnificent red velvet mantle of the Empress of Russia, is lined with. 228 sable skins, each worth £12, being valued at nearly £4000 : .
