FIRE BRIGADE CALLS

Two outbreaks of grass and rubbish fires near the railway siding at Main Street were attended by the Palmerston North Fire Brigade on Satur-, day afternoon. The calls were received at 2.45 p.m. and 6.58 p.m.,' and both fires were extinguished without difficulty. At 4.31 p.m. the brigade was called to Flat 5, Turner Flats, King Street, where a fire had broken out in a gas oven, only minor damage resulting. At 2.20 p.m. on Saturday the Palmerston North Fire Brigade was called to the residence of Mr R. P. McGlashan, 238 Fitzherbert Avenue, where a box of rubbish before a copper fire had ignited and 6et fire to one wall of the wash-house. The fire was extinguished without difficulty and the damage was slight. The brigade received 16 calls during December, compared with ten in the similar month of 1944. Of the calls this month 12 were property fires, three grass and rubbish, and one was a malicious false alarm.
