LEVEL CROSSING SMASH

TWO MEN INJURED. NAPIER, Dec. 30.

With a crash that was heard half a mile away, the railcar Takitimu, travelling from Wairoa to Wellington, struck a small motor-car on the Ellison Street crossing, Napier, at 1.40 p.m. on Saturday. Two men, who were the occupants of the car, escapod with slight irjiiries. They are:—Mr Herbert Jamos Exeter, of Napier, cut hfiad, abrasions and shock; and Mr Colin Cebbie, of Hastings, abrasions and shock. > The force of the collision tossed the motor-car 60 feet; the men were thrown clear. The railcar continued for about 200 yards before it came to rest with its fore-bogie' off the rails. It is thought that the derailment of. the bogie was caused by the cow-catcher being forced under the wheels after the railcar had travelled about 100 yards. The permanent way was slightly damaged. The motor-car was completely wrecked. The Takitimu was involved in the accident at Westshore several months ago when five men were killed.

The railcar. which was due to arrive in Palmerston North at about 5 o'clock, did not reach this junction until 7 p.m. and' the south-bound Gisborne express, which is due at 7.20 p.m., was about 45 minutes late.
