FEILDING
'On the Dunnolly Road, yesterday afternoon, shortly before 5 o’clock two cars cam© into collision and both were severely damaged. Mr J. W. Luxford, of Te Kuiti, was the driver of on© and Mrs M. E. Lethbridge of Arapata, the driver of the other. Fortunately, neither party was injured. It was clearly indicated today by an examination of the shopping area that until Saturday closing is classified there will be some shops open and others shut. Butchers, grocers, fruiterers, hairdressers, stationers, mercers, drapers, and chemists were among the shops which had their doors open this morning. Some of the smaller retail shops were closed and one of the larger draper’s shops. Although there was no stock sale in Feilding yesterday there was a good sprinkling of country people in the shopping area and possibly many of the shoppers paid a visit because of some apprehension as to whether the shops would be open today or not. Referring to the Christmas trading this year, a retailer stated that his takings during Christmas week were 75 per cent, higher than last year’s. Sergt. d. H. Oowan, who returned on the Mooltan, spent Christmas in Feilding with his wife and small son. Mrs Cowan has been living with her parents, Mr and Mrs F. Zuppicich. They have now left for Te Hana, North Auckland, where Sergt. Cowan has a farm. A very pleasant evening was held in the St. John Ambulance building on December 20, when the girl cadets held a concert, during which they demonstrated bandaging. The function w'as opened with a welcome speech by the secretary (Miss M. Knight) to the parents and friends of the cadets, and a vote of thanks to Mr Eric Bramwell, who generously placed his piano and his services at the cadets’ disposal. Shoulder sprays were presented to Mrs Eric Bramwell and the lady cadet superintentent (Miss Bealing) and a buttonhole to Mr Bramwell by Sergt. Marion Packer. An appreciative audience applauded the variolis items which were given by the girls. Later Mr Bramwell and Miss Knight led community singing which was heartily entered into by all. A buffet supper was served in the lecture room, during which the district officer (Mr C. Hausmann) spoke on the singular progress that the girl cadets had made under the able leadership of their lady superintendent. Musical honours were accorded Miss Bealing and she was the recipient of a handsome box of chocolates presented by the cadets. '
