MEN FOR IRON FOUNDRIES

DIRECTION IN BRITAIN. (Rec. 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 27. The Labour Ministry has directed 15,000 workers to iron foundaries, says the Daily Mail. This mass direction of workers is to increase production of baths, cookers, grates, piping and guttering for the housing programme. Directed workers will be granted deferment of military call-up. The workers will be young men with experience of foundry work in non-fer-rous metals and steel who are becoming redundant as war work ceases. The shortage of foundry workers is estimated to be about 35,000, of whom 15,000 are needed to increase the output of light castings for houses. Fewer workers are offering voluntarily for this work, in spite of high wages.
