OBITUARY

IMR A. C. MATTHEWS. The late Mr Arthur Crook Matthews, who passed away on December 5 subsequent to an operation, followed the calling of a butcher in Palmerston North for over 20 years, having been in business in Cuba Street. Mr Matthews found his main interests in his 'work and in his home, and the residence, at U Regent Street, showed in its attractive garden the proud attention he devoted to it. Thirty-three years ago Mr Matthews came to New Zealand with Mrs Matthews, and their five children, from the village of Arlangham, in Gloucestershire, They travelled on the Turakina. and first resided at New Plymouth, where Mr Matthews followed his trade as a butcher for seven years. The family then moved to Palmerston North, Mr Matthews taking over a butchery business in Cuba Street, which he conducted until he retired about three years ago. Although he was in his 76th year, Mr Matthews continued to lead an active life and his passing came as a severe shock to his family. Mr Matthews was a member of the Queen Street Hall assembly and regularly attended services held there. Mr Matthews is survived by Ins w 7ilow. Mrs Gertrude Maude Matthews, and the five children of the marriage are Messrs Vernon Matthews (Taradale), Vivian Matthews (Panama), Montague Matthews (Palmerston North), Mrs G- Cooper (Palmerston North) and Miss C. Matthews (Palmerston North).
