A British paratroop battalion which won fame at Arnhem and two companies of Gurkhas have arrived at Batavia. Indonesians today attempted* to set fire to a petrol dump in the Batavia docks. ' Extremists armed with machineguns and mortars ambushed a British Indian patrol near Sourabaya, killing two and wounding four of the patrol. An Allied spokesman stated that the efforts of Dr Sjalirir’s Government to gain control •of West Java are 'having noticeable effects. The Indonesian Peace Preservation Corp’s leaders are co-operating well with the British authorities at Bandoeng. The chiefs of the corps have ordered the clearing of all extremists from the road between Buitenzorg and Soekaboemi, which was the scene of a heavy attack on a big Allied convoy from Batavia to Bandofeng. Indonesians in Central Java are apparently preparing to occupy Ambarawa, which has now been cleared of Rapwi (Relief of Allied War Prisoners and Internees) personnel and stores.
