KILLING GERMS BY SOUND
NEW AUSTRALIAN MACHINE. MELBOURNE, Nov. 23. A machine that kills germs by sound has been invented by a Melbourne electrical engineer, Mr R. Shick, who described his method ‘as a “form of atomic energy.” In appear.ance the machine is a cross between a wireless set and an ice-chest. It lias been devised in co-operation with the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research for the destruction of bacteria in making serums. Called a sound oscillator, the machine violently shakes the germs with sound vibration which throws them to pieces. Tests have shown that after a few minutes the germs are smashed to smithereens. Mr Shick said: “While atomic energy is being used, wa are not •splitting the atom, but throwing one against the other. The force multiplies terrifically and would produce something akin to the atomic energy used on the Japanese cities.” Similar machines would be capable of killing bacteria in milk by heating, without destroying its value, he added.
