GREEK ELECTIONS
EARLY POLL PROMISED,
(Rec. 11.25 a.m.) ATHENS, Nov. 23 The British Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs (Mr McNeil) announced that the Sofoulis Government had undertaken to hold elections before March, 1946. Mr McNeil denied that Britain had interfered in any Greek political questions on which she bad not been consulted.
“I swear on solemn oath that ,we have no preference for any person, people or party,” he said. “Our only interest is in reconstruction.” The Sofoulis Government’s first decree orders the elimination from the police and the gendarmerie of all officers and other ranks engaged in political activities of any kind. A’ communique issued after tlie new Government’s first meeting said the main points in the programme were the re-establishment of an ordered economy and restoration of law and order. The Government urged the people to remain calm and disciplined. Efforts are still being made to persuade Archbishop Damaskinos to withdraw his resignation from the Regency.
