Rev. L. A. Brooks, of the Cuba Street Methodist Church, has been appointed secretary of the Hawke’s Bay-Manawatu District Synod for next year.
The death has occurred in England of Lieut.-Colonel F. W. Huggins. In 1944 Colonel Huggins received the British appointment as Deputy-Com-missioner for the Western Pacific and Administrative Officer for the Gilbert and Ellice Islands. He served in both wars and was a member of the Nelson City Council for three terms. On the New Zealand , High Commissioner’s recommendation bursaries at King’s College, Cambridge, have been awarded to Flight-Lieut. D. H. Tudhope (Auckland University College) and R.N.Z.N.V.R. Lieuts. D. G. Collmgwood and J. M. Cope (Victoria University College, Wellington). Mr Cope is a member of a Palmerston North family and was educated at the Boys’ High School. The death has occurred in Otago of Rev. Leonard H. Hunt,. formerly Presbyterian minister at Ivarori. Mr Hunt, who was born on August 3, 1882, was ordained at Marton in 1916, and, after being in charge there for five years, was transferred to Mount Eden, Auckland. In 1932 he went to Karori and remained in that charge till 1936, when he suffered a serious breakdown in health from which he never recovered.
Dr Harold Palmer, of London, has been appointed to the newly-created post of psychiatric physician to the Otago Hospital Board. Dr Palmer possesses the following medical degrees and diplomas:—M.B., Ch.B. (Manchester, 1927), D.P.M. (Manchester, 1931), M.D. (Manchester, 1931), M.R.C.P. (London, 1932). Dr Brian C. Thompson, of Denham, near Uxbridge, England, has been appointed to the post of tuberculosis officer to the board. Dr Thompson was educated at Durham School, Cambridge University, and the Victoria Infirmary at Newcastle-on-Tyne, graduating MB., Ch.B., at Cambridge in 1931, and M.D. in 1936. The present inspector at the head office of the Bank of New Zealand, Mr R. D. Moore, has been appointed assistant general manager. Mr Moore has had a varied and wide experience, both in New Zealand and' overseas. He served for some time in Sydney and Melbourne, and in 1938 he accompanied Mr D. F. Reid, then London manager, on an extensive business tour through the United Statesand was subsequently attached to the London office as assistant to the manager. . He remained there during the blitz periods. Mr Moore returned to New Zealand early last year, and was then apnointed manager at Invercargill, and later inspector at head office. Mr 0. M. Samuel, at present sub-insoector at head office, has been appointed an inspector.
