BIG EVENTS TOMORROW.

The Dominion’s premier galloping- event, the New Zealand Cup, is to be decided at Riccarton tomorrow, and as usual the field is a strong one with a number o£ young and promising performers engaged. The Southlander, Signal Officer, has been the favourite and he is a well-performed galloper. He is now, however, a doubtful smarter. The event is very open. Despite his big weight. Longsword has many admirers. Piccolo's form at Trentham was outstanding. Golden Souvenir won nicely at Motukarara last week, while Langue d’Or prevailed at Otaki. The Mitchelson Cup winner, Sir Bian, has a large following, while of the lightweights, Fortune’s Smile, Broiefield, Authentic and Pride of Mossburn should run good races. It looks like being a splendid race.

Advice from Christchurch states that there has been no rain there for/ 24 days and the track at Riccarton is akin to concrete. This is likely to find the weak spots in unsound horses and, in addition to Signal Officer, the prospects of Chung Chong and Sphere starting arc now only tentative. Golden Souvenir is the favourite in Christchurch.

The North Island, appears to. dominate the Stewards’ Handicap field with Tuis, Reorapa, Sweet Biscuit, Master Dash and Theiolyn as its representatives. The local attraction will be the Woodville Jockey Club’s meeting, and excellent acceptances have been received. Latest reports indicate that the track is in good order and the club should experience a successful meeting. The Woodville track is one of the best in the Dominion and a popular one with trainers.
