BREAD SUPPLIES
NO DELIVERIES MEANTIME. - At a fullv representative meeting of ' master bakers from Palmerston North, Feilding, Levin Woodville, Pahiatua, Otaki and Paraparaumu, held during the week-end to consider the resumption of normal deliveries, it was unanimously resolved that no extension of delivery services could be undertaken until such time as delivery charges have been increased to cover these costs.
In a report supplied by the Master Bakers' Association it was stated that;;,; since the price of bread and delivery charges were fixed in 1936 no increase had been granted to the trade, and in fact during the early years of the"-" war conditions were such that a Government subsidy was paid for a period „« to assist the trade. With the rational-" "-*• isation of conditions brought about by zoning and the curtailment of deliver- -■ ies to private customers, the trade"" made able to carry on and absorb the increases in costs of manufacture and;,".: distribution, but with present costs it was impossible to revert to the prewar deliveries. Tyres had more than doubled in price and the tyres' at pr'es-'."; ent being received were inferior to '"" those of pre-war days. Similarly, it was stated, it was understood that the price of new vans when they become available would be nearly doubled. While working hours had been re- .1: duced, wages, petrol, oil, repairs and' freight charges had all increased considerably. .
