DESIRE TO RETIRE
ADMIRAL HALSEY'S REQUEST. WASHINGTON, Sept. 30.
General Wainwright has appointed head of the United States Eastern Defence Command. He will assume his duties after a rest. The National Broadcasting Corporation correspondent reports from Honolulu that Admiral Halsey has requested that he be permitted to retire from the navy to. make way-for a younger officer.
