BREACH WITH ARGENTINA
ADVOCACY BY CONGRESSMEN. (10.25 a.m.) WASHINGTON, Sept, 28.
More than 1000 prominent persons have been arrested in Buenos Aires since Wednesday.
A. State Department spokesman said that a general review of United States policy regarding Argentina was imminent because of the recent political developments there. Meanwhile, several Congressmen have advocated the breaking of diplomatic relations ami the imposition of economic sanctions. The former American Ambassador, Mr S. Braden, who is on his way to Washington from Argentina, said in Puerto Rico that the American nations could not sit idly by, watching the course of, events in Argentina. He added that he was shocked but not surprised by the developments. Mr Braden estimated that more than 90 per cent, of the Argentinians were pro-Democratic and friendly to the United States.
This Earroll Government is reported to be planning a counter-demonstration to the Democracy rally which was held on September 19. All public employees will be forced to participate. The Buenos Aires correspondent of the New York Herald-Tribune says the presidents of at least three of the six national universities have been arrested. The professors and students struck as a mark of disapproval. The police reported that they were ordered to occupy the universities. The, Argentine Foreign Minister issued a communique at midnight stating. "The state of siege in Argentina in no way affects the inarch towards constitutional normality, which the Government wants as soon as possible. When the Government lifted the previous state of siege on August 6 it had no idea that the ample liberties provided by our laws would be utilised for conspiracy manoeuvres." In Lima the Peruvian Senate adopted a resolution reaffirming its sympathy with the Argentine people and expressed the hope that civil rights would soon be restored.
