BURIED IN COAL
WORKER'S NARROW ESCAPE
A mishap at the State mine bins at Ngakawau, near Westport, involved an employee, Herbert Poynter (formerly of Palmer*ton North), married, aged about 45, in a m'ost unenviable experience. Mr Poynter was shovelling coal in the bin when a slip occurred and he was buried. A lad who was with him at the time, Royden Dixon., aged about 16, promptly jumped into the bin to assist Mr Poynter. but went right through and out the bottom into a truck placed for loading. About 10 tons of coal had to be shifted by rescuers before it was possible to extricate Mr Poynter, to whom artificial respiration was applied. Mr Poynter made a good- recovery.
Mr Poynter was a resident of Palmerston North for about 20 years prior to being directed by the manpower authorities to work in the coal mines. He was actively connected with St. John Ambulance and Boy Scout organisations in this city.
