SINGAPORE BASE
(Rec. 2 p.m.) LONDON. Sent. 26. The Singapore Naval Base will not be functioning to its pre-war capacity for many months. It is at present under the control of 30 officers and a few hundred ratings of the Royal Marines. It is estimated that within a few months the repair facilities will be restored to 30 per cent, of the peacetime efficiency.
The King George V graying dock, which is capable of accommodating the largest battleship afloat, is intact. Senior officers consider that the 5000ton floating dock, which was scuttled in 1942 before the surrender, raised by the Japanese, and again sunk by Allied bombing, will never be of much use a^ain.
