FAULTY EQUIPMENT

IMPROVEMENT DEMANDED

(Press Assn) WELLINGTON, Sept. 27 “I must confess I was staggered at the amount of faulty equipment found to be on the market in New Zealand,” said Air L. B. Hutton, presenting a report on faulty materials to the national conference of the Electric Supply Authority Engineers’ Association. Mr Hutton said that the Public Works Department had called a conference of all parties concerned with electrical equipment, and at an all-day sitting astounding facts were revealed. Committees had been set up with the purpose of improving standards. - L

Mr Hutton said that samples of faulty materials had been received by the association from 10 electric supply authorities, among them irons, solder irons, jug elements, jug lids, rubber-covered flex, appliance flexy fuse holders, - plugs, sockets, switches, switch plates, toaster elements, ceiling outlets, earth clamps, connectors, adaptors, and iron elements. A careful inspection had been made, and faulty design, faulty workmanship, and faulty or unsuitable material were apparent. Though the range of articles submitted was small, they disclosed a tendency on the part of some New Zealand manufacturers and, in less, common instances, some overseas manufacturers to depart from a standard which was in the best interest of the country and the electrical industry. Mr Hutton’s report., on behalf of a subcommittee of the association, was adopted, together with a recommendation that the committee’s findings should be conveyed to the Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department, with a request that the matter receive the special attention of the Advisory Committee on Electrical Regulations, with a view to his arranging for relaxation of the restrictions on the import of approved electrical appliances and fittings from overseas.
