BACK AT SINGAPORE
BRITISH NAVAL FORCE. NO LANDINGS YET. LONDON, Sept. 3. A British naval force lias arrived at Singapore but no landing is expected for two or three days. In the meantime Admiral Mountbatten lias ' given orders to the Japanese to make full arrangements for the landing parties and to prepare the naval base for its return to the British. He has also instructed the Japanese commander to withdraw liis garrisons from the small outlying islands. Admiral Sir Arthur Power, Com-mander-in-Chief of the East Indies Fleet, was flying his flag in the cruiser Cleopatra when he arrived at Singapore with British and Indian minesweepers and the Royal Navy auxiliary Orange Leaf, says a Colombo message. Rear-Admiral Cedric Holland, who commanded the Ark Royal in 1940 and 1941, flying his flag in the • cruiser Sussex, accompanied by H.M.S Vigilant, is diie at' Singapore tomorrow with the occupying iorce which will be ready to land immediately preliminary arrangements have been concluded.
The New Delhi radio has sent a message to the Allied officers who were dropped by parachute on Singapore advising them that a flying-boat is landing at Singapore tomorrow. The radio requested an urgent, reply to a message regarding the sick in Singapore, and details of the Hahaur internment camp in Malaya. The Japanese garrison at Penang, Malaya, formally surrendered last night. The surrender was made by a Japanese Admiral, who ivore a British decoration and a Victory Medal of the last war, aboard H.M.S. Nelson.
