MAGISTRATE’S COURT
Mr C. C. Marsack, S.M., presided at a sitting of the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. George Horace Smith, of no fixed abode, was charged that on September 1, at Palmerston North, he was deemed to be an idle and disorderly person in that he had no lawful visible means of support. Accused, who pleaded guilty, was ordered | to come up for sentence if called upon! within 12 months. j G. E. Sutherland was fined 10s for] riding a motorcycle when not holding a! license. W. G. Twigg (Mr H. R. Cooper) was fined 5s for driving without a license, and on a second charge, of failing to give way to traffic on the right, was fined £2 10sj For crossing an intersection against the traffic lights, H. D. Jacobs was fined 10s. A charge of crossing the junction of Broadway with the Square against the traffic lights was preferred against \Y. C. Fitzwater, who also was fined 10s.
Paris. —France beat England hv 73 points to 29 in the first international athletic contest, since the outbreak of war. Ten thousand spectators at Colombes Stadium ! gave both teams a tremendous ovation i when they came out, and then stood up and observed two minutes’ silence in memory of athletes of both nations killed in war. London. —The New Delhi radio disclosed that of the 1,000,000 troops of the South-East Asia Command on June 1, 700,000 were of the Indian Army. One million Indian troops had been engaged 1 lighting the Japanese in Burma and the enemy overseas, including the Germans and Italians.
