Mr Churchill has flown to Northern Italy, where he is staying as General Alexander’s guest, says a London message. At the Wellington competitions the pianoforte duet, 16 years and over, was won by two Palmerston North competitors. Misses Waercti Burgess and Dorothy McKegg, with 80 points. Both are pupils of the Convent. j Behind the casualty list of Air Force personnel published in the “Manawatu Standard” on Saturday lies the story of several airmen who teamed up at Oliakea during their training and who were on an operational flight from their base in the Admiralty Islands when their plane crashed into the sea half-a-niile from the shore. The pilot was Flight-Sergt. J. W. Mummery, of Palmerston North, and among the airmen who are presumed to have lost their lives is Flight-Sergt. J. Hartley, whose wife and infant daughter reside at Upper Hutt. In civilian life FlightSergt. Hartley was employed by the I Wellington Harbour Board. For some i time he was stationed in Linton Camp j and the Showgrounds, where he was 1 a sergeant in the Ordnance Corps. He made many friends in Palmerston North, who will regret bo learn of the mishap which overtook the plane. Flight-Sergt. -Hartley was a capable tennis player and enjoyed many games on the Palmerston North. Club’s courts where he was well liked for his unassuming personality.
