EFFECTS OF CONCUSSION

MONKEYS’ BRAINS WATCHED. (Rec. 10.45 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 2. The journal Medical World in an article describes how United States navy surgeons substituted transparent plastic material for skull bones in living monkeys and observed and filmed the effects of brain injuries. It adds that the experiment foreshadows a new attack on the problems of concussion. ' “After providing a monkey with a transparent skull it was then possible to knock the unfortunate animal on the head and observe the reactions of the brain which- are difficult to describe,” adds the article. “There were movements more or less of a swirling character which reduced in amount if the head was fixed. The Americans shot small missilies in through the plastic, and the brain. The result was not immediately fatal. The effect on the brain was one which might be expected from the sudden introduction of a high velocity projectile. It may have been rather a dreadful adventure for the monkeys, but it will help us to take the matter further.”
