OBITUARY
Mr John Stringer, whose death was reported in the "Manawatu Standard" on Friday, was 77 years of age. A son of the late John and Ellen Stringer, original settlers of Fcilding, he was born near London and came to New Zealand with his parenls at the time of the settlement of the Manchester Block in 1874. He wad then five yearn of age and saw the birth of Fcilding and participated in its development on of the bush-covered land. Mr Stringer was a bachelor and for many years waa borough foreman of the outside stall. When the call came for the reclamation of waistc materials he was one of these who, as a war effort, volunteered to help in the handling of the materials which came forward to the Fcilding depot. Many tons of waste paper, rags, etc., were handled at this depot, thanks to the untiring and unselfish work of Mr Stringer along with Mr A. Wickham and the late Mr R. J. Goodman. A brother, William, predeceased Mr Stringer, while Mrs V. A. D. Franco, of Manchester Street, is a sister.
