PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE

The monthly meeting of the executive of the Manawatu Women's Patriotic Committee was hold in the Mayoress's room, Mrs Mansford presiding. Mrs Mansford welcomed Mrs Barnett back to the executive alter leave of absence. Reports were received as follow: Prisoners of War Association. —Mrs Spencer stated that Ikt committee hud agreed to the proposal of the executive that all repatriated prisoners of war in Zone D area participate in the welcome homo gift. A motion of sympathy was passed with tho relatives of the late Mrs C. Hargreaves. At the general meeting 42 members were present. Mrs Spencer welcomed Privates Key, Kirk and Lynch, who recently returned home. The secretary appealed to members for their assistance to the Lady Galway Guild in sorting and packing garments for Unrra. Pte. Lynch thanked members for their efforts on behalf of local prisoners of war. Shop Committee. —Mrs Barnett reported that the shop receipts for July were £lB9 3s 2d This sum brought the total receipts to £22,364 14s sd, with expenditure amounting to £328 5s 7^l. Parcels Committee. —Mrs Northey staled that a roster was prepared to help with the quarterly packing of Zone D parcels, 800 parcels were to be dispatched by the Middle of September. It was decided that the whole committee help in the sorting and packing of clothing for Unrra's 17,000 . parcels had been packed and dispatched by I the committee. I Lady Galway Guild. —Mrs Sorenson reI ported that a letter was received from Mr IJ. R. flardie regarding servicing the j A.N.A. Canteen on November 2 to 4. It was agreed to accept these dates. An excellent response was received to the appeal {or clothing for Unrra. The guild'had i packed 18 cases at their rooms, those con--1 tained 224 women's top-coats, 20 frocks, *J4 costumes, 247 skills. 148 cardigans, 74 short coats', 81 men's lop-coats, as well as 13 suits, 66 suit coats, blankets, underi clothing and baby clothing. In addition, 54 cases were packed at the Army Barracks, Main Street. These contained 650 women's top-coats, 561 cardigans, 304 tkirls, 488 frocks, 223 costumes. 75 blouses, Men's, boys', girls' and baby garments were also packed. Knitting and Hussif Branch.—Mrs Manning reported that 160 garments were forwarded during July. These comprised 11 jerseys, 14 long-sleeved pullovers, 8 pairs mittens, 33 pairs socks, 14 polo-necked scarves,' 2 pairs gloves, and 72 hussifs. .This committee also offered their services I in packing clothing for Unrra. I A.N.A. House Committee. —Canteen Committee (Mrs Northey) : 347 teas and ly suppers were served in July. The receipts were £l7 7s 9d and expenditure £l3 13s Bd. Organisations servicing the can teen were the Prisoners of War Committee. League of Mothers, Y.W.C.A., Knick Knack Club. United Guild, St. Vincent de Paul. Mrs Robertson, an auxiliary member, was made a member of the committee and Mesdames Johnson. Cliadwielc and Miss Kearns were elected auxiliary members. Dance Committee {Miss Gillies): 2072 hnd attended at the dance hall during the month; 800 were present at the annual ball. The receipts were £235 15s 9d, and expenditure £l2B 9s 3d. Mrs 'McCaskill thanked Miss Gillies -and all the members of the committee for their help in making the ball such a success. Spb. eial mention was made of the work of Mrs Smith and her helpers for the floral decorations, and Mrs Lyno and her helpers for organising the supper. Miss E. Warren was made an auxiliary member, Decorations Committee: Every week the rooms are artistically decorated and the secretary wis asked to thank Mrs Stitbbs in appreciation of this work. Music Group: Mrs Mansford reported for Miss Rawlins, that the boys greatly appreciated the music. ' Mrs Mansford thanked all the committees for their reports and asked all branches ■to carry on with their work in the mean- , time.
