(Kec. 11.55.) WASHINGTON, Aug. 24 The Navy Department revealed that 85 planes were destroyed and 55 damaged and 10 men killed when a Liberator veered off the runway at Eniwetok, in the Marshalls, in August, 1944. Seven 5001 b bombs exploded, destroying 58 bombers and 27 fighters.
The Navy Department announced that the submarine Bullhead is overdue and is presumed lost. The United States has lost 52 submarines, of which 43 were reported overdue and presumed lost. Eour are known to have been sunk, two destroyed to prevent capture and three written off due to loss or damage. (Nooh.) BERLIN, Aug. 24.
Leo Borchard, the conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, . was shot dead shortly before midnight last night when his car -failed to heed an American outpost's command to halt. Three soldiers shouted and waved torches. When the car sped past two soldiers fired. One bullet struck Borchard in the head. Another man and a woman were injured.
