NO BANKING ALLOWED

CATCHMENT BOARD'S EDICT. "It has been brought to this board's notice that approximately 30 chains of stop-banking have been erected on the right bank of the Manawatu River below Akers's toll bridge," stated a letter from the Manawatu. Catchment Board received at a meeting of the Manawatu-Oroua River Board yesterday, "i am directed by my board to ask your board's reasons for not obtaining the prior consent of tins board to the work, i am also directed to advise your board that no further stop-banking, irrespective of the cost, is to be undertaken by your board without the prior consent of the Manawatu Catchment Board." The letter was signed by the engineer to the Catchment Board (Mr D. J. Ha'lley). It was reported by the secretary of the River Board (Mr R. H. Spencer) that a letter had been sent to Mr H. W. Alve stating it had been the River Board's intention to bank only round the houses to give them protection and not to make a continuous bank, for which the consent of the Catchment Board would have to be obtained. The letter had suggested that the consent of the Catchment Board be sought. In the meantime, the River Board had no option but to give formal notice to pull chnvn the banking done by him and his brothers. The engineer (Mr H. R. Farquhar) said Messrs Alve had had erected eight chains of banking on their own account, connecting two isolated sections of banking. It was reported that three sections of banking had been carried out by the River Board. Each had cost under £SO (the limit to which the Catchment Board had previously allowed the River Board to go in such work), but when Messrs Alve had had the sections joined the whole cost had amounted to more thnn the £SO limit.

The Catchment Board's letter was received.
