REHABILITATION LOANS

JULY A RECORD MONTH

(P.A.) AVELLINGTON, Aug. 23. AVith an increase of almost £150,000 over the previous month’s figures, July was by far the busiest month for loan authorisations so far made to ex-servicemen and women, states the monthly review of the Rehabilitation Department. Altogether loans totalling £914,329 were authorised during the month as against the previous month’s record total of £709,250. This brought the grand total of loan authorisations made to the end of July to £9,541,197. Of this £9,043,770 has been to men returned from overseas service and £OBI9 to returned service women. Home Service personnel have benefited to the extent of £378,997, merchant seamen £40,922, and widows and dependants of' deceased servicemen £70,659.

The number assisted by way of loans during July was 1149, bringing the total so assisted to 14,765, of whom apart from seamen 13,440 had had service overseas. Eighty-nine servicemen were assisted to purchase farms to a total value of £341,062, bringing the total of financed farms to 1014 at a cost of £3,537,509.

By far the greatest increase during the month was shown in the number of loans Cor building or buying homes, the total for the month being 392 valued at £457,072. Of these loans 163 valued at £230,953 were for the erection of houses and 224 valued at £226.139 were for the purchase of existing dxvellings. The total number of housing loans now authorised is 4091 involving £4.514,271. Included in this are 2104 interest-free supplementary loans totalling £332,746, of _ which 231 totallinn£34,79s were authorised during July. ° A total of 111 cx-seryicomcn and one cxscrviccwoman wore assisted during July to set up in businesses by being granted loans aggregating £66,919. This brings the businesses established to 1712, involvin'* £794,997. During July, 524 wore authorised to use the £IOO interest-free furniture loan involving £47,408, bringing the total of furniture loans to 7305 valued at £666,556 Twenty-eight loans totalling £877 ( vorc made for tho purchase of tools of trade making an aggregate of these loans of 529 representing £16,104. Four advances for miscellaneous purposes totalling £391 wero made, making a total of 84 loans of this nature involving £11,760.
