GIRL MUNITION WORKERS
MAJORITY STAY IN CITY. (Press Assn.) WELLINGTON. Aug. 19 Girls mimpowered to Wellington lor munition making are being given the opportunity to return to their home towns now that munition making has been ordered to cease. it lias been found that only about one-third wish to go back borne as yet. The M.nistcr of Supply and Munitions (Mr Sullivan) announced on \ P-I)ay that ortlers bad been given lor munitions manufacture to stop. When the Ford motor works at Lower Hutt opened on Friday alter two days’ holiday the Petono and Lower Hutt Manpower Officer and his stall' interviewed the girls employed there to ascertain how many ol them, whose homes were not in Wellington, desired to return home. The Controller of Manpower (Mr FIL. Boekett) stated that all the giris were informed that if they desired to return to their home towns they could, but they were invited to volunteer to remain m Wellington for other essential work. Of the 200 girls interviewed, saitl Mr Boekett, 50 elected to return to their home towns. It was estimated that 50 of the remaining 150 had their homes in the Wellington d strict and 100 had their homes in other parts of New Zealand. Those 150 vol--unteereu lor other essential woik in Wellington and the Hutt Valley: They were given the opportunity of going to woollen mills, clothing factories, tobacco factories, biscuit nianulacturing, and hospital work, and to a lew other essential industries. “It is very pleasing to note that approximately two-thirds of the girls whose homes are in other parts of New Zealand elected to remain in (ho district to undertake other essential work, said Air Boekett. “These girls wore given an assurance, however, that if they desired to return homo no obstacle would be P acod in their way. There are approximately 80 more girls to be interviewed and no doub the. results from interviewing the lirst, 200 will bo reflected in' the remaining, group.”
