COLTS BEAT HOROWHENUA
Individualism played a prominent part in the colts' match on Saturday when Manawatu beat Uorowhenua by 9 points to 6. For several periods the play was fast, open, and exciting. Forwards and backs on both sides were fairly evenly matched for weight, and there was not much to pick between .thorn on performance. Horowhenua's Maori players were nippy and resourceful, and broke up a number of Manawatu movements by playing right into the Manawatu line and takinrr interceptions off the fingers of the attackers. Horowhenua's two tries came from this stvle of play, both being scored after very fine efforts by 11. Smith, of Foxton, who is completing his first season in inter-club Rugby after captaining the Nelson College first fifteen, for two Jisirs. In both cases ho simply outran the opposition. The Horowhcnua full-back, 11. Ropata, was another who impressed. In the Manawatu team Stirling was head and shoulders above bis fellows. Iwo tries cann his way, and he was exceedingly unluckv with'another attempt. Manawatu were without the services of Bcatty, a young Air Force member who has pla'vcd himself into prominence lately, lie "has now been transferred to another R.N.Z.A.F. station. The, first tr'v for Manawatu was scored by Collier. R, Smith next scored for Uorowhenua from nearly in nndficld and Manawatu again took the lead when Harkness scored nicely well in. Collier and Sterling were associated in the next try. Stirling finishing a fine effort. The final try was scored by Sinith for Uorowhenua.
