EXTRACTS FROM "STANDARD. MAY 10, 1915.
According to a special message from London it was stated that there were 2160 passengers and crew aboard the Lusitatua when "sho was torpedoed, off Southern Ireland. The survivors numbered 658. So far 145 bodies had been recovered. A later mesasge stated that two torpedoes struck the vcsesl and theso were followed by terrific explosions. Nearly all the first-class passengers perished. By using asphyxiating gas the Germans had overcome the British and recaptured Hill 60. near Yprcs. The British had counter-attacked but were driven off by more gas attacks. Reports ot successes in the Dardanelles came from Athens. Great endeavours were being made to capture Nagara. An unconfirmed report slated that a Russian force had landed on the Turkish side of the Black Sea.
