Barber) at a meeting of the council yesterday when a ' telegram was received from the Acting-Prime Minister (Mr Nash) about the holding of VEDay celebrations today. "The efforts of the Allies against the great German armies have been wonderful," Cr Barber added. "Britain has a lot to be proud of for the way she stood alone against Germany prior to the other Allies entering the war. 1 hope it will not be long before the Japanese war is finished also and we can get down to settling the problems which will arise in the post-war period." The chairman paid a tribute to Mr Churchill's spirit and also referred to the great loss suffered by the Allies in the death of President Roosevelt. Cr Barber spoke of the atrocities committed by ' the Germans, stating that it was pleasing to know they had ended.
