'Dio Palmerston North. Citv Council advised tlio Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce, at a meeting of the latter, last evening, that the matter of installing a public weighbridge had been placed on the estimates for the current year. Mr A. P. Stuart stated a case arose recently when' the need for a city weighbridge was stressed.

Delay in Publication. Last week 23!) towns attained their quotas of National War Savings, two more than in the preceding week, kightcen of the principal centres were successful and in each of the 19 postal districts the full district quota was reached. The achievement of two places in 3'ic Palmorston North district, Apiti and Kangiwahiu, is especially noteworthy, the full annual quota having already been recorded at each.

Decentralisation of Factories. Decentralisation of factories was a subject which came before the Palmorston North Chamber of Commerce, last evening, following a recommendation from the, chamber's trade and commerce committee. The committee recommended that a conference of interested bodies be organised witn a view to preparing u brochure setting out the advantages of Palmerston North in the decentralisation of factories.

Bakehouse Damaged by Fire. The bakehouse of Mr R. Bridcwe'll at iJ-J iUain Street was the scene of a fire about 1.30 a.m. today. Situated in a two-storey brick building, the bakehouse was "fairly extensively damaged. Stocks of Hour on the second floor were damaged by smoke and water, but not by the flames. The plant and equipment were destroyed and the amount of flour damaged is estimated at about £l5O, Although the building, plant and stock arc covered by insurance, Mr Bridewell is a' heavy loser.

Ruapehui's Fresh Outburst. With a jj,reat volume of steam and ash pouring from the crater and frequent loud rumblings which could be heard at the Chateau yesterday, Ruapehu lias broken out again into fairly violent eruption. The activity was first observed on Saturday, but since then tub mountain has been obscured by cloud Until today, when from Palmerston North a column of steam could again be seen. As if giving its' own victory salute, the mountain was emitting a great plume which drifted across the sky on a light westerly breeze.

Work,on Road Drains. •'lt seems to me the workmen today are not what they were a few years ago," said Cr E. W. Croucher at the Kairanga County Council meeting yesterday during the course of remarks on the state of drains in some parts of the county. He compared the satisfactory state of drains in one part and the less satisfactory position in others. The engineer pointed out that lack of manpower was a serious factor. Cr J. H. Hiflas supported Cr Croucher and added that ratepayers in the area where the drains were not satisfactory were asking questions. / Motor Fatalities in April. Six road deaths were reported during April, according to figures released by the Transport Department. Three of these were pedestrians, two being small children. Two of the pedestrian accidents happened in Au;i".land .and one in Feilding. The other three fatalities involved a motor-cyclist whose machine left the road near Dunedin, an occupant of a lorry who tried to stop a runaway trailer near Nelson, and a cyclist in the Manawatu district. There were 11 deaths on the road during April, 1944. 14 in April, 1943, and 20 in April. 1942.

Annual Holidays Act. The trade and commerce committee of tlie Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce recommended to the chamber, last evening, that a conference be held so as to obtain the opinions of the interested bodies and business firms on the Annual Holidays Act. The recommendation was adopted. It was stated that the practice adopted 'last year by employers of grouping the compulsory holidays under the Annual Holidays Act with the Christmas and New Year holidays was considered in some circles unsatisfactory in that it seriously inconvenienced the public....
